Every musical movement seems to have exactly one forefather. Daniel Johnston was there for the Weird Folk friends. Our annoying "nerds" will love RSM aka R. Stevie Moore. As soon as they discover him like this:
Measured by his nerdiness and musical abilities, R. Stevie Moore stands in a line with other underground but re-discovered geniuses like Daniel Johnston, Roky Erickson, Gary Wilson or Arthur Russell. But whilst Daniel made a lot of fancy comics, Stevie was into DIY video taping. Watch them on Youtube:
It's musicians like Ariel Pink and John Maus who drew this extraordinary musician back into the arena. Now there is a documentation coming up. Don't miss it.
Get this record. It fuses the Beach Boys with Westcoast Garage Rock. The guys at rough trade east love it. Pitchfork loves it. Insound loves it. I love it. But the real reason is: it makes autumn feel like spring. Go for it: http://www.zshare.net/download/61456597c8781dd3/
Impossible! But Yes! I just found a jewel on the net. Beloved one-eyed perverted cyber-dandy MOMUS has put up his entire collection of CREATION records albums for free download here: http://ubu.com/sound/momus.html
Momus is and has always been an inspiring artist. Get an impression:
Originally from the Glasgow arts scene playing with former members of New Wave group Josef K, sophisticated poseur Momus was amongst the first to challenge electronic songwriting, combining homeproduction, electronic pet-shop-esque pop elements with "real" instruments and classic, narrative songwriting. It might have been him to coin the term Folktronica, way back in 2000.
Listen what Momus writes about his 1993 record: Timelord Momus is living alone in his Cleveland Street flat -- flatmate Vicky has returned to New Zealand, and her Andy Warhol wallpapered bedroom, now equipped with a fearsomely futuristic Apple DuoDock 230 computer, has become the recording studio in which Timelord, the first Momus album recorded entirely at home, takes shape. There's even a rudimentary CompuServe internet connection in the room, so Timelord is also the first Momus album of the internet age. 1993. Okay? 1994 he had to move to Paris, to marry his assumably underage girlfriend who seemed to have been threatened by her bangladeshi family for her relationship with this strange guy.
In june 2009, a tl;dr or better a tl;dl (over one hour!) interview about his WHOLE story was released on youtube:
